What's your notice period policy?

We had some feedback in last year’s staff survey that some staff would like us to extend our contractual notice periods to help reduce the burden on the rest of the team when someone leaves their role.

I’ve had approval from our SLT to do this, but now some staff are worried having a longer notice period would be off-putting to potential employers. I’d love to know from you all - how long are your notice periods?

Specifically would love to hear about notice periods for staff in non-managerial roles (most staff at this level in our org are being paid about £35k outside of London in case that’s helpful!)

After successfully passing their probation, our notice period is 1 month for non-managerial roles and 3 months for managers and specialist roles. This seems to be fairly standard so hasn’t put off applicants.

In practice, it is quite difficult to hold someone to a longer notice period if they have secured another job - and sometimes not always helpful if the person already has one foot out of the door and is resentful about being held to it.

I appreciate the challenge though - and covering vacancies has been particularly difficult in my small team of 6, largely specialist roles.
